A hearty and flavorful classic patty melt sandwich made with juicy beef patty, melted cheese, caramelized onions, and toasted rye bread, perfect for lunch or dinner.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: pickles, lettuce, tomato for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tbsp of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes. Remove onions and set aside.
  2. Form ground beef into 4 equal patties, season with salt and pepper.
  3. In the same skillet, cook beef patties over medium heat until cooked through, about 4 minutes per side. During last minute, top each patty with a slice of cheese and let melt.
  4. Toast rye bread slices in a separate pan or toaster until golden brown.
  5. Assemble the sandwiches: Place a beef patty with melted cheese on one slice of bread, top with caramelized onions, and cover with the other slice.
  6. Optional: grill the assembled sandwich in the skillet until bread is crispy and cheese is extra gooey, about 2 minutes per side.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, spread a little Dijon mustard on the bread slices before assembling.
  • Use high-quality rye bread for best results.
  • Serve with pickles or a side salad for a complete meal.
