Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 4 slices rye bread
- 4 slices cheddar cheese
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: pickles, lettuce, tomato for serving
Instructions
- Heat 1 tbsp of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes. Remove onions and set aside.
- Form ground beef into 4 equal patties, season with salt and pepper.
- In the same skillet, cook beef patties over medium heat until cooked through, about 4 minutes per side. During last minute, top each patty with a slice of cheese and let melt.
- Toast rye bread slices in a separate pan or toaster until golden brown.
- Assemble the sandwiches: Place a beef patty with melted cheese on one slice of bread, top with caramelized onions, and cover with the other slice.
- Optional: grill the assembled sandwich in the skillet until bread is crispy and cheese is extra gooey, about 2 minutes per side.
Notes
- For extra flavor, spread a little Dijon mustard on the bread slices before assembling.
- Use high-quality rye bread for best results.
- Serve with pickles or a side salad for a complete meal.
