  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (preferably 80% lean)
  • 4 slices of cheddar cheese, sliced or shredded
  • 4 burger buns, brioche or sesame seed preferred
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (optional for toppings)
  • Fresh lettuce, tomato slices, pickles, and additional cheese for toppings (optional)
  • Butter for toasting buns

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef with salt and pepper. Divide into four equal portions and shape into patties, slightly larger than the buns. Make small indentations in the center of each.
  2. Heat grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Add olive oil if needed. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side. During the last minute, place slices of cheddar cheese on each patty to melt.
  3. Butter the cut sides of the buns and toast until golden brown on a grill or skillet.
  4. Assemble the burgers by layering the toasted bottom bun with lettuce, tomato, the cheesy beef patty, onions, pickles, and mayonnaise if desired. Top with the bun and serve hot.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add crispy bacon or sautéed mushrooms.
  • Use different cheese varieties like Pepper Jack or Swiss for variety.
  • Reheat leftovers in microwave or oven; add fresh cheese slices during reheating for extra gooeyness.
  • Toast buns well for added crunch.
